PB funded an After School Soccer and Basketball program in Vallejo following an amazing collaboration among the Vallejo City Unified District (VCUSD), the City of Vallejo and the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD). The After-School Sports Program was a PB proposal implemented by the VCUSD where $50,000 was allocated to provide soccer and basketball programs for youth. These are one of the many PB projects that go beyond funding capital projects and are aimed at sustaining beneficial programs for the local community. This program has been implemented throughout 14 Elementary and Middle Schools in Vallejo targeting low to middle income families. The program began in April 2016 and will run until June 2017. The Vallejo Unified School District (VCUSD), in partnership with the City of Vallejo and the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD), hosted Spring Mayhem Madness to commemorate the conclusion of the basketball portion of the PB-funded Afterschool Sports Program – Soccer and Basketball project. Held on Saturday, May 21, the tournament featured competitions for the 280 students participating in the basketball program and an appreciation ceremony to thank the City Council, GVRD, and the Cycle 3 PB Spanish-Speaking Budget Delegate Committee that developed the proposal for last year’s PB ballot.
The Afterschool Sports Program was recommended by 1,629 PB voters and approved by City Council in the third cycle of PB. Allocated $50,000 of Measure B funding, the project funded afterschool basketball and soccer coaches at 14 VCUSD schools that already have an After School Education and Safety (ASES) programs.
