Through the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), millions of new education dollars will flow to California’s school districts, along with new requirements to engage local stakeholders in budgeting. But how can we make sure that this community involvement is meaningful and leads to equitable spending? Join The California Endowment and The Participatory Budgeting Project to learn about participatory budgeting—a process that gives people real power over real money to make the decisions that affect their lives. Participatory budgeting is a democratic process in which ordinary community members directly decide how to spend part of the public budget. It has been used around the world for 25 years, in over 1,500 cities, to lift up the needs of residents and make public spending more equitable. Learn about recent participatory budgeting experiences in New York, San Francisco, Vallejo, and elsewhere, and how this model has been applied to school funding. Hear about effective ways to approach local school officials about this approach and explore if participatory budgeting makes sense for your community. You can watch a three minute video about participatory budgeting here. The webinar will also include an update on LCFF discussions and responses from key organizers.
