Participatory Budgeting Video Wins MacArthur Foundation Prize

The new Participatory Budgeting video from Meerkat Media Collective just won 3rd place (out of 428 submissions) in the Looking@Democracy challenge! The contest, coordinated by the Illinois Humanities Council and the MacArthur Foundation, solicited digital media pieces designed to spark a dialogue around the question of how to strengthen American democracy.

The PB video, “Reinventing Democracy through Participatory Budgeting,” received a $15,000 award, which will help cover costs for video documentation of the next PB cycle in NYC. The video captures PB in action in New York, Chicago, and Vallejo (California) and highlights its impacts in those communities.

Looking@Democracy judge Ian Inaba said of the video, “Our democracy is strengthened when government decisions are more transparent and citizens are given the ability to participate in those decisions. This beautifully produced short film shows us that a more participatory democracy is possible in communities across America, today.”
