The contractor will work in Boston, MA to help document the PB curriculum implemented in city’s participatory budgeting process.

 

About the Project

The Participatory Budgeting Project, Inc. (PBP) is a non-profit organization based in New York City. Our mission is to empower people to decide together how to spend public money. We create and support participatory budgeting processes that deepen democracy, build stronger communities, and make public budgets more equitable and effective. We work with elected officials, government agencies, and community groups in the US and Canada to set up participatory budgeting (PB) processes that enable local people to decide how to spend part of a public budget.

Since fall 2013, PBP has partnered with the City of Boston to launch the first Youth PB process in the US, inviting young community members to develop and vote on proposals for how to spend $1,000,000 of the city capital budget.

 

Purpose of the Position

The contractor will assist PBP staff and local partners in documenting workshops and skill building opportunities geared toward youth leaders who are deeply engaged in the PB process. The final product will be a leadership curriculum that can be used in Boston and other cities. This contract position will last for approximately 4 months, from February until early June, 2015.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Important responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend Youth Lead the Change workshops and meetings.
  • Observe and document the events.
  • Shape the workshops and meetings into a PB leadership curriculum guide.

 

Skills Desired

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Understanding of educational curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Ability to document and evaluate curriculum.
  • Self-directed project management ability.
  • Knowledge of local community organizations in Boston.
  • Interest in issues affecting low-income and marginalized communities.
  • Skills working with Google applications and Microsoft Office applications.

 

Preferred Experience

One to two years of increasingly responsible experience with educational curriculum development.

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Essential functions are performed in both community based settings and on a personal computer. Position requires significant travel throughout Boston to attend meetings. Meetings typically take place in the afternoons/evenings and occasionally on weekends.

 

Compensation:

This is a temporary contract position. Time commitment will range from 15-20 hours per month from February to June, including workday, weekend and evening hours. This position does not include benefits. Compensation to be negotiated depending on experience and skills.
