PB is “Democracy Made by You”

isaiah-pb-2“more trees to help us breathe…more libraries so we can study…more fruits and veggie gardens to eat healthy things instead of good sugary things..”

These were some of the participatory budgeting ideas that 12-year-old Isaiah wrote down, as he joined his grandmother at a recent PB idea collection assembly in a public housing community center.

After a contentious presidential election, participatory budgeting offers a way forward for our democracy. It builds empowering and inclusive spaces for those whose voices often aren’t heard in elections–young folks like Isaiah, formerly incarcerated individuals, undocumented people, and many others.Stand with us as we mobilize with empathy and grace to empower residents to transform our democracy.

The Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP) creates and supports PB processes that deepen democracy, build stronger and more inclusive communities, and make public budgets more equitable and effective. For the past seven years, we have been the lead organization growing PB across North America.

We have helped to support PB processes in more than 20 cities, distribute over $200 million to much-needed community projects, and engage more than 250,000 people.

On Giving Tuesday, November 29th an international day of giving, we are launching our “Democracy Made by You” Campaign. Our goal is to raise $30,000. Your gift will amplify PB’s impact, empowering residents like Isaiah to transform our democracy.

This #GivingTuesday you can help PBP launch and support PB processes in many more communities. On August 1, 2016, the Movement for Black Lives released its platform to elevate the experiences and leadership of the most marginalized Black communities. The platform listed participatory budgeting as a way to build real community control for local, state, and federal government.

You know the power of PB to transform communities and residents.

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to help us build on our shared vision of  repairing the broken relationship between government and the people. Your gift will  lift up the voices of thousands of residents in marginalized communities, like it did for 12-year-old Isaiah.

We ask that you consider giving a gift during our “Democracy Made by You” Campaign on or before November 29th.

We are so encouraged by your commitment to see real democracy become part of everyday civic engagement in every community, with participation from everyone.

Thank you for being part of this movement with us.

“I can’t think of a reason why people wouldn’t want to be part of and support PB. I feel like a lot of people of color don’t have a voice in their communities meaning they don’t have opportunities to share and express how they really feel about certain things that take place in their communities. PB places power back in the hands of the community and makes people, especially people of color, feel empowered by the decisions they are making in their own communities with real money.”

Naomi Estevez, 16-years-old, PB leader and participant at Friends of the High Line
